The National Concerto Competition was the inspiration of Professor John Ritchie, who wanted to provide a performance opportunity for New Zealand’s finest young classical musicians. The first competition was held in late 1967/early 1968 and attracted 53 entries. Since its beginnings, a major feature of the Competition is the opportunity it provides for finalists to perform their chosen work with a symphony orchestra in a public performance.
The National Concerto Competition Trust was established in 1975 and since then the Trustees have taken responsibility for planning and presenting the annual Competition. The Competition caters to orchestral instruments and the piano in alternate years and draws entries from the most outstanding young musicians from New Zealand and overseas, many of whom have gone on to establish national and international careers in performance music.

The Trustees of the National Concerto Competition Trust are Tim Andrews (Chair), Sue Bealing, Michael Lawrence, Mark Hodgkinson and Vivienne Levy. Our patron is Michael Houstoun.

Former trustees have included Wallace Woodley, Peter Barton, Wolf Just, David Sell, Maurice Till, Graeme Wallis, and Howard Harvey. Prior to the formation of the Trust, the Concerto Competitions were chaired by Professor John Ritchie.

The National Concerto Competition Trust appreciates the ongoing support of the executive and administration team at the Christchurch Civic Music Council.
